Hello! It’s good to finally be able to ‘talk’
to other musicians and music fans via a CD and this website.
I’ve
spent most of my musical career playing other people’s music, and I had a lot of fun doing that. It's much
easier to get attention and approval by playing tunes that people already know and recognize instantly when you play it for
them. I’m good at that, too—I can make it sound ‘just like the CD,’ and there’s
a lot of satisfaction in that. But it’s been short-sighted not to bring out my own voice before now.
Hard Rock
is still what moves me the most—it’s the closest to the classical music that I grew up. It’s
what challenges me the most when I write. I find it relatively easy to come up with the music.
It’s finding words that have the same degree of interest and intensity that’s difficult for me; I don’t
want to slack off in this department, and I’m disappointed when other hard rock or metal bands seem to do so.
The songs that have meant the most to me are hopefully echoed in this album, even though it may not sound like
them. "Four Sticks" by Led Zeppelin, "Summerland" by King's X, "Cry You a Song" by Jethro
Tull, and "Woman" by the James Gang, are all wonderful songs that inspired me. In newer times, I've also been
moved by "Crawling in the Dark," (Hoobastank), "The Pretender," (Foo Fighters), and "Cherub
Rock," (Smashing Pumpkins.) My blog is at http://talesintheillusion.blogspot.com.
For the CD Forgotten Song, go to Myspace.com/farrellwills. You can stream
the songs or buy them there.
The Ethel Merman Experience is the novelty act that I've played with for over
seven years. EMX features my female alter ego, Anita Oneida. We do classic hard rock, as interpreted by Ethel Merman
herself. You can hear the Broadway diva doing Led Zep, AC/DC, and Nirvana. On July 9th, 2011, you'll find us in
Reno. We'll play the afternoon Gay Pride concert in the park by the river. In the evening we'll be at club Ten99, 1099
S. Virginia Street, Reno, (775) 329-1099. In the meantime, you can view us on Youtube, by typing in "EMX-Ethel.".
As of February, 2011, I'm starting a new hard rock project with guitarist Fran Franks. She spent time as a pro
guitarist in L.A. during the 70s and 80s, and has come out of musical retirement to play the classics with me. We're
currently doing the jam circuit, playing St.James Gate in Belmont on Thursday nights, and other venues from time to time.
We'll feature Montrose, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, and other crunch-and-riff bands from the 60s until now. Hard
rock is alive and well out there, and we'll be contributing with a full band soon. email:
